DIY Chamomile, Mint & Rosehip Facial Steam

Getting a facial at the spa is my favorite thing to do next to a massage for a bit of self-care. I find it even more enjoyable than just a plain massage because my esthetician combines the facial with a bit of massage so I get the best of both worlds.

But I only go all out with the spa facial 3 times a year and the rest of it is all at home with exfoliators, masks and facial steams.

I grow a variety of herbs out in the garden and many can be used for culinary recipes but I realized I can use them for beauty recipes too! The chamomile and peppermint I use for this facial steam were both grown out in the garden. The rosehips were purchased at PCC Market (local to the Seattle area) which has a great bulk section. You can find dried chamomile there too. I’m sure if you have a similar natural and organic focused grocery market you can find items in the bulk section for a DIY facial steam.

This recipe could also double as a tea because of the herbs but I haven’t tried that yet.

What you’ll need:

2 teaspoons chamomile
2 teaspoons mint (I am using peppermint leaf)
2 teaspoons rosehips
5 cups (40oz) of boiling water*
Towel that you can drape over your head and the bowl

*You can adjust depending on how large or small your bowl is

  1. Bring a pot or kettle of water to a boil. Remove from heat and transfer to a heat safe bowl and countertop.
  2. Add herbs to water.
  3. Lean over the bowl and cover your head and the bowl with the towel. Stay like this for 5-10 minutes or until there is no more steam.
  4. Follow up with a moisturizer or a mask.

I love Herbivore Botanical’s face masks and I’ve been using Dior skincare products for a while. The pink pore refining Dior mask is one of my favorites.

This is just one of many combinations of herbs you can use for an at-home DIY facial steam but this is what I had on hand and it worked out perfectly. If you don’t have plain herbs on hand but have peppermint or chamomile tea around, those can work too! Or try some essential oils like lavender and peppermint. You’ve most likely got something already on hand for a facial steam.
