2019 Goodreads Challenge – Quarterly Update

I’ve been doing the Goodreads challenge the last few years as a way to get myself to read more. There was a period of time during and after college where I just didn’t read as much as I used to. I would always think back on when I was 10 or 11 and could knock out a 500 to 1000 page fantasy novel like it was nothing.

And in December, I kept coming back to that period of time in my life because I had started reading the Wheel of Time series and only made it through book 6 or 7. And 20 years later that was really bothering me. I had never finished the series and I wanted to. So in December of last year I picked up The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World again and started reading.

I’m trying to pepper other non-fantasy books in with my reading but I have always loved that genre of book so it looks like that will dominate my year of reading.

Reading Challenge

My goal is 24 books for the year. On average that’s two books a month, which if I was reading 300 page books probably wouldn’t be that hard to hit, but I’m heavy into the Wheel of Time series which is getting up to the 800-1000 page range. And now that it’s spring, the weather is getting nicer and I just want to be outside in my garden.

I do have quite a bit of travel for work coming up and will use time in the air to read. I’ve also been bad about social media time lately and have been spending a bit more time scrolling than I was a few months ago.

I’m hoping to use these quarterly posts to check in and keep myself accountable and hopefully some of you will find something interesting to pick up!

What I’ve Read from January – March

  1. Wheel of Time #3: The Dragon Reborn
  2. Wheel of Time #4: Shadow Rising
  3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  4. Wheel of Time #5: Fires of Heaven

As of the end of March, I’m two books behind, but am in the process of reading a number of books.

What I’m Currently Reading

  • The Wheel of Time #6: Lord of Chaos
  • Chief Joseph & the Flight of the Nez Perce
  • Lady Macbeth: Daughter of Ravens (The Saga of Lady Macbeth, #1) // if I’m totally honest about this one though, I’m not sure if I’ll finish it. There was a fairly detailed assault scene in the beginning of the book that didn’t sit well with me and I’m trying to reflect on why. In Outlander there are a few scenes with attempted and successful assault and I’ve re-read that book a number of times without having as visceral reaction as I did to this scene.
  • The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey // This wasn’t what I thought it was going to be and have paused on reading it for the moment but would like to pick it up as soon as I finish some of the above books.

So I’m a bit behind, but have many books in progress. I think I’m still on track as of right now to hit my goal for the year.

What books are you reading right now? Do you take part in the Goodreads challenge too?

xx
Stephanie

i have never heard of this challenge, but it sounds like something positive to try. i know someone once said, the smartest people are the ones that read regularly. something like that. anyways right now i’m reading a lot of self-help books myself…trying to navigate what it is exactly that i want or at least want to try outside of what i am already doing.

It’s a great way to keep track of what you’re reading/what you’ve read!

The biggest thing for me was consciously making an effort to put my phone and pick up a book instead. I know that sounds nuts but the less time I spend mindlessly scrolling the more I spend reading! Or even just taking 30 minutes before you go to bed to read a little bit, then it starts to become second nature!

Thank you! I believe in you, it just takes a little time each day to get through a few pages and before you know it, there’s your book for the month!
