What the Desert Taught Me

I pull my bike out of the back of my dad’s Subaru, mulling over the fact I should really buy a bike rack for Arizona. The dusty tire marks are all over the back of the car: the windows and the side walls. Not much to be done for that when you’re in the desert. Leaning the bike against the car, I decide on the final route I’ll ride this evening while I start my Apple Watch exercise tracker as well as Strava. Did you even ride if you didn’t track it? I tuck my phone away in my hip pack. I’m vaguely aware of the cars on the highway immediately behind me, and I’m continually scanning the new arrivals at the lot. It’s not lost on me that this sport is primarily dominated by men. I have a knife in my hip pack just in case. I’ve never felt unsafe while riding alone except for that one time I got catcalled while heading into the trails, but I am always aware. Just in case. I pull my knee pads up, lock the car, another quick check that my hip bag is zipped, and that I’ve got both bottles of…

Sheraton White Horse Pass: A Day at Aji Spa

My mom and I have started a new tradition: every April around her birthday I come down to visit and we go spend the majority of the day at Aji Spa at the Sheraton White Horse Pass. The last time I was the botanical garden was for another art and light exhibit in 2016, but I was excited for this one because it had a little bit of a festival vibe with the music and light exhibits.…

Of Sun and Cold Shoulders

My parents moved to Arizona a few years ago and I will say it is quite nice to come and visit mid-winter and escape the dreary grey sky and utter soaking wet of Seattle. Even if the Arizona evenings are chilly, you can still wrap up in a blanket and sit by one of those snazzy chic patio heaters and enjoy the evening.…

Valley of the Sun

Last week I went to spend a few days in Mesa with my mom.  The desert landscape and the history of the people who inhabited and survived there is so intriguing to me.  The heat was a nice escape from rainy and wet Seattle, and it was almost 40 degrees warmer down there then the Pacific Northwest! It’s a drastic change but to feel that sun hit your skin and soak in is a beautiful thing.…
